Don't Expect an iOS 4.3.4 Untether Anytime Soon

i0n1c, the hacker behind the jailbreak untether for iOS 4.3 - iOS 4.3.3, is telling users not expect an untether for iOS 4.3.4 anytime soon.

Don't expect a iOS 4.3.4 untether anytime soon.

In a way it is nice to see that Apple instead of merely fixing vulns add more mitigation checks. But for jailbreakers this suxx.

As we have already mentioned several times, do not update to iOS 4.3.4. Instead, use JailbreakMe to jailbreak your device on iOS 4.3.3. You can find instructions on how to do this here.

iPhone Dev-Team Releases Tethered Jailbreak using RedSn0w for iOS 4.3.4

The iPhone Dev-Team has released RedSn0w 0.9.8b3 which can perform a tethered jailbreak on iOS 4.3.4.

-
For the convenience of kernel hackers like @comex and @i0n1c, we have a new redsn0w 0.9.8b3 that supports a TETHERED jailbreak for iOS 4.3.4 on all devices that have 4.3.4 except the iPad2. The vast majority of people will want to stay back at 4.3.3 because that's where the untethered jailbreak is! There are no new features in 4.3.4 - only fixes for jailbreak exploits.

Also, this is a good time to remind everyone (since we're still seeing confusion about this): iPad2 owners with a baseband (3G or CDMA) cannot currently use saved blobs to go back to 4.3.3 once the signing window is closed. This is unlike every other device, so don't be confused! iPad2 owners with basebands should stay away from all updates to maintain your jailbreak!
-

You can download RedSn0w 0.9.8b3 from here: (Mac, Windows)

Apple Ordered to Pay $8 Million for Infringing on Playlist Patent

Apple has been ordered to pay Personal Audio LLC $8 million after a federal jury in Texas found that the company infringed on a patent for downloadable playlists, according to Bloomberg.

Personal Audio, a patent licensing company with an office in Beaumont, Texas, sued Apple in 2009 for $84 million in damages, claiming infringement of two patents. The jury today found that the patents were infringed, and upheld their validity, according to Personal Audio's lawyer, Ron Schutz of Robins Kaplan in Minneapolis.

Bloomberg notes that the patents covered an audio player that could receive navigable playlists and skip forward or backward through the downloaded list. Apple said it wasn't using the patents and that they were invalid.

HDMI Organization Says Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Cables Cannot Be Sold

HDMI Licensing, LLC, the agent responsible for administration of the HDMI Specification, says Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cannot be sold and should be withdrawn from stores.

TechRadar was told that there are several reasons for this:

"The HDMI specification defines an HDMI cable as having only HDMI connectors on the ends. Anything else is not a licensed use of the specification and therefore, not allowed."

Also, "All HDMI products undergo compliance testing as defined by the Compliance Testing Specification. The CTS clearly defines necessary tests for all products defined in the HDMI Specification. Since this new cable product is undefined in the Specification, there are no tests associated with this product. It cannot be tested against the Specification."

MacRumors reports that Monoprice has already discontinued their cable; however, the Apple Store is still selling the cable.

For those who need to go from Mini DisplayPort to HDMI, an alternative would be using a Mini DisplayPort to a female HDMI dongle.

Access Your iDevice on a Windows Network With Samba Port for iOS

Samba, an implementation of the Windows SMB protocol that lets you access devices over your network, has been ported to iOS. This will allow you to access your iDevice files over a Wi-Fi network using Windows.

The current default configuration for Samba on iOS gives you read-only access to most of the file system and write access to an empty storage directory. This is actually done to prevent accidental damage (it's easy in Windows Explorer to move a directory from one place to the other by accident). If you want more control over the sharing I highly recommend reading about Samba and how to configure it to do what you want (the configuration file resides in /etc/samba/smb.conf).

Popular use cases:
● Going to your friends and using your iDevice as an portable storage device which works over WiFi without needing any file copying software on their Windows machine.
● Browsing your photos from your favorite photo viewer on your computer over WiFi.
● For the advanced users you can have full streaming access to your iDevice files from your computer.

You can download Samba from the BigBoss Cydia Repository.

Apple Store Overnight on July 13th to Prepare for OS X Lion, New MacBook Airs?

Apple Store employees will reportedly work overnight on July 13th to prepare for what may be the release of Mac OS X Lion and/or new MacBook Airs, according to 9to5Mac. This falls in line with a previous prediction by the same site that Apple will release Mac OS X Lion on July 14th.

We're expecting the Lion release obviously, and also some new MacBook Airs which may or may not have faster storage, a Sandy Bridge CPU and Thunderbolts coming out the side. We've heard some stories of backlit keyboards, 3Gs, a black option and the mythical 15-inch MacBook Air HD but they seem unlikely at this point.

Along with the Airs, there have been shortages of the White MacBooks, Mac Minis and (perhaps redesigned) Pros – everything that doesn't currently have Thunderbolt - so those could also see updates. If not on the 14th, then perhaps shortly after.

Earlier reports have predicted that Apple is holding back all its hardware releases until Mac OS X Lion ships.

Leaked Photo Shows iPhone 5 Running on China Mobile?

A photo has been leaked online which claims to show a next generation iPhone running on China Mobile's 3G TD-SCDMA network, reports AppleInsider.

Several Chinese-character news websites, including sohu.com (translation) and mydrivers.com (translation), re-printed the unauthenticated photo, which depicts a device resembling an iPhone 4 with China Mobile's 3G logo printed in the upper right corner and running an unreleased version of Apple's baseband software carrying version number 06.10.01. The handset also lacks an IMEI number, which the reports suggest is an indication that the device represents an evaluation model.

Brian White, an analyst for Ticonderoga Securities, says that a China Mobile iPhone could "represent a watershed for Apple" giving the company access to 611 million wireless subscribers and 68% of China's wireless market.

"Over the past several months, we have written about China Mobile's mysterious relationship with Apple that has allowed the company to support iPhone subscribers on its network without an official carrier agreement," he wrote. "For example, we have written about China Mobile's iPhone 4 SIM card cutting service, followed by the sale of a mini SIM card and then the retail sale of the iPhone 4 at a few select locations."

Last month a photo of Tim Cook was taken in the lobby of China Mobile’s Headquarters and recently China Mobile Chairman Wang Jianzhou said that they'd reached a consensus with Apple on the use of their fourth generation technology in iPhones.

How to Jailbreak Your iPhone 4, 3GS, iPad 1, iPad 2, iPod touch 3, and iPod touch 4 Using JailbreakMe 4.3.3

These are instructions on how to jailbreak your idevice firmware versions supported:
● iPad1: 4.3 through 4.3.3
● iPad2: 4.3.3
● iPhone3GS: 4.3 through 4.3.3
● iPhone4: 4.3 through 4.3.3
● iPhone4-CDMA: 4.2.6 through 4.2.8
● iPod touch 3g: 4.3, 4.3.2, 4.3.3
● iPod touch 4g: 4.3 through 4.3.3
using JailbreakMe.

If you are already on iOS 4.3.3 or iOS 4.2.8 you can skip the first five steps of this tutorial.

*Remember that updating to iOS 4.3.3 will update your baseband and perhaps ruin your chances of an unlock. Use TinyUmbrella (Mac, Windows) to update the iPhone 4 to iOS 4.3.3 without updating the baseband.

Step One
Create a Pwnage folder on your desktop and place the iOS 4.3.3 or iOS 4.2.8 (Verizon CDMA) ipsw in it.

You can download the ipsw for your device from here:
4.3.3 (3GS): iPhone2,1_4.3.3_8J2_Restore.ipsw
4.3.3 (4 GSM): iPhone3,1_4.3.3_8J2_Restore.ipsw
4.2.8 (4 CDMA): iPhone3,3_4.2.8_8E401_Restore.ipsw
4.3.3 (3G): iPod3,1_4.3.3_8J2_Restore.ipsw
4.3.3 (4G): iPod4,1_4.3.3_8J2_Restore.ipsw

4.3.3 (iPad 1): iPad1,1_4.3.3_8J3_Restore.ipsw
4.3.3 (iPad 2 Wi-Fi): iPad2,1_4.3.3_8J2_Restore.ipsw
4.3.3 (iPad 2 GSM): iPad2,2_4.3.3_8J2_Restore.ipsw
4.3.3 (iPad 2 CDMA): iPad2,3_4.3.3_8J2_Restore.ipsw

Step Two
Connect your iDevice to the computer and launch iTunes.

Step Three
Select your iDevice from the list of devices on the left

Step Four
Hold down the Option (Mac) or Shift (Windows) key and click the Restore button.

Step Five
Select the iOS 4.3.3 ipsw from the Pwnage folder on your desktop and click Open.

Step Six
Once your iDevice is running iOS 4.3.3, press to launch Safari from your desktop.

Step Seven
Navigate to http://www.jailbreakme.com and press the Free button.

Step Eight
Press the Install button.

Step Nine
Safari will now close and Cydia will download and install.

Step Ten
Press to launch Cydia and enjoy your jailbroken iDevice!

***Thanks goes to Comex for his hard work on this impressive jailbreak!***

Apple Will Allow You to Run Multiple Copies of Lion on One Computer

Apple will allow you to run multiple copies of Mac OS X Lion on the same computer, reports MacRumors.

Previously the ability to do this has been available to Mac OS X Server only. The End User Licensing Agreement that is included with Mac OS X Lion GM Seed reveals that you are now permitted to run up to two additional instances of Lion on your computer.

From the 10.7 EULA:
(iii) to install, use and run up to two (2) additional copies or instances of the Apple Software within virtual operating system environments on each Mac Computer you own or control that is already running the Apple Software.

Users who are planning to do this will be happy to know that extra licenses are not required.
