Warning Jailbreakers Should Not Update to iOS 6.1.3

Jailbreakers should not update to iOS 6.1.3 as it will likely remove the ability to jailbreak.

Last month, planetbeing (David Wang) revealed that iOS 6.1.3 beta 2 patched at least one of the five bugs used to jailbreak. Specifically, the flaw in the operating system's time zone settings is no longer there.

It's very likely that Apple includes at least this patch if not others in the public release of iOS 6.1.3. We'll let you know as soon as we have confirmation from the Evad3rs; however, at this time you should not update.

It may also be prudent to save your SHSH blobs if you haven't already. Instructions can be found here: Mac, Windows.

New iWatch Concept Features Sleek Design

Edgar Rios has posted a new concept for the Apple iWatch that features a sleek design in both black and white.

Rios created both analog and digital homescreens, a music player, and Notification Center for his watch.

This is the best design I have seen to date and hope the Apple version will be similar.

T-Mobile Responds to AT&T's Attack Ad Images

T-Mobile has released three new ads in response to an AT&T ad that attacked the quality of its network, reports TmoNews.

The ads read:
● Can You See The Beads of Sweat In This Ads?

● What Keeps AT&T Up At Night? Apparently Us.

● If AT&T Thought Our Network Wasn't Great, Why Did They Try To Buy It?

If you've seen AT&T's recent ads, someone is obviously worried. With T-Mobile turning up the heat, they apparently feel the need to take cheap shots at our network. Well, don't take AT&T's word for it, or ours for that matter. See the facts about T-Mobile's 4G network for yourself at t-mobile.com/coverage.

Senator Ron Wyden Introduces Bill to Make Cell Phone Unlocking Legal

Senator Ron Wyden has introduced the 'Wireless Device Independence Act' a bill that if passed will make cell phone unlocking legal, reports The Hill.

The move comes just one day after the White House and the FCC came out in support of making cell phone unlocking legal in response to a petition that garnered 114,000 signatures. Since 2006, The Library of Congress had issued an exemption to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act that allowed for cell phone unlocking; however, it decided not to extend that exemption past January, 2013.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy said, "I intend to work in a bipartisan, bicameral fashion to restore users’ ability to unlock their phones and provide them with the choice and freedom that we have all come to expect in the digital era."

Sen. Amy Klobuchar who chairs the Judiciary Committee's Subcommittee on Antitrust, Competition Policy and Consumer Rights, said she also plans to introduce her own bill this week.

“Consumers should be free to choose the phone and service that best fits their needs and their budgets," Klobuchar said.

Rep. Jason Chaffetz also recently tweeted that he is working on cellphone unlocking legislation. "You own the phone, you should be able to unlock it," he wrote.

All consumers should be thankful to those who took the time the sign petition as it appears to have made a significant impact.

Samsung Signs Deal to Buy 3% Stake in Sharp

Samsung has signed a deal to purchase a 3% stake in Sharp, a key supplier of screens to Apple, reports the WSJ.

The ¥10.4 billion ($110 million) being invested by Samsung will help Sharp keep its operations afloat and prove to lenders and customers that its prospects are solid.

"The investment is set to fortify the partnership between Samsung and Sharp and also lay a firm foundation for Samsung to secure a steady supply of LCD panels from diversified sources," the South Korean company said.

Sharp was forced to look to its rival for help after a larger ¥66.9 billion investment deal with Hon Hai fell through due to the company's poor performance.

Analysis of Apple's capital expenditures reveals that the company may have spent $2 billion to prevent Sharp from going under.

It's unclear how Sharp's deal with Samsung will affect their relationship with Apple moving forward.

The Evad3rs have released fixes for the those experiencing problems with the Weather app or long reboots after performing the Evasi0n jailbreak.

The fixes can be applied easily by updating the evasi0n 6.x untether and uikittools packages in Cydia, reports planetbeing.

Fixes for the long reboot issue and Weather app issue are now available on Cydia with an update to the untether and uikittools.

Evasi0n Jailbreakers Slam Cydia Servers, Experience Weather App Issues

Those who were able to successfully jailbreak their device were met with lots of server errors in Cydia as millions hit the repos to download their favorite tweaks and themes.

As saurik points out (Jay Freeman), the big difference with this jailbreak was how the team pointed toward an exact release time, which caused the huge influx of new users launching Cydia. Saurik has been working around the clock to help rearchitect his repository setup, but for now, it seems many of us will simply have to be patient, wait it out and hope the heavy load of users balances out.

Other users are reporting issues with the weather app crashing on iPhone and iPod versions, and appearing on the iPad jailbreaks. The evad3rs team is aware of this, and is working around the clock to help push out an update via Cydia. Please note that you do not need to rejailbreak if you are currently having weather app issues. Simply wait for the dev team to release an update via Cydia, and you can update there once you are prompted.

We've also been seeing some of our users running into devices stuck on "patching kernel" or "Finding Offsets" during the jailbreak. We recommend you wait for as long as you can, but if that fails, hold down home and power to force a reboot (via Pod2g).

Finally, some users have been having devices randomly get stuck on boot at the Apple logo. If this happens, we recommend that you hold home and power for ten seconds and keep trying. Eventually, the device should boot. If that does not work, try holding volume up button if you recently installed a MobileSubstrate tweak.

We'll be posting more detailed tutorials very shortly. To be the first to know when these are available please follow Limerain on TwitterFacebook, or RSS to be notified of any updates.

Apple Officially Announces iOS 6.1, 300 Million Devices on iOS 6

Apple has published an official press release for iOS 6.1 and revealed that nearly 300 million devices are now on iOS 6.

Apple today updated iOS to version 6.1, adding LTE capabilities to 36 additional iPhone carriers and 23 additional iPad carriers around the world, so even more iPhone 5, iPad mini and iPad with Retina display users can experience ultrafast wireless performance to browse, download and stream content at blazing fast speeds. To date, iOS users have uploaded over nine billion photos to Photo Stream, sent over 450 billion iMessages and received over four trillion notifications.

“iOS 6 is the world’s most advanced mobile operating system, and with nearly 300 million iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices on iOS 6 in just five months, it may be the most popular new version of an OS in history,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “iOS 6.1 brings LTE support to more markets around the world, so even more users can enjoy ultrafast Safari browsing, FaceTime video calls, iCloud services, and iTunes and App Store downloads.”

Apple notes that additional updates in iOS 6.1 include the ability to use Siri to purchase movie tickets in the US through Fandango, and iTunes Match subscribers can download individual songs to their iOS devices from iCloud. The company also reported that the App Store now offers over 800,000 apps with over 300,000 of those being native iPad apps. More than 40 billion apps have been downloaded and over 7 billion dollars have been paid to developers.

Availability
iOS 6.1 is available as a free software update today. iOS 6.1 is compatible with iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad (third and fourth generation), iPad mini, iPad 2 and iPod touch (fourth and fifth generation).

Apple TV 2 Will Be Supported By Upcoming Jailbreak

The Apple TV 2 will be included in the upcoming jailbreak, according to MuscleNerd of the Evad3rs Dev-Team.

Awesome...as @EvilPenguin_ pointed out, we're seeing the final ATV2 6.1 today too. So ATV2 will be covered by the JB (not ATV3 tho).

Unfortunately, as mentioned earlier the Apple TV 3 will not be supported by this jailbreak.

Jailbreakers Should Update to iOS 6.1 Using iTunes, Not Using Software Update

Pimskeks of the Evad3rs Dev-Team reveals that those looking to apply the new iOS 6.1 jailbreak should update to the firmware using iTunes.

If you people plan to upgrade to iOS 6.1 please don't do an OTA upgrade. Please make a full restore using iTunes.

Just moments ago Planetbeing confirmed that their untethered jailbreak works with new iOS 6.1 final firmware released by Apple today and MuscleNerd hinted that the jailbreak will be released this Sunday.

Update:
MuscleNerd offers some insight as to why this is necessary, "a few reasons: OTA is more time consuming for us to test, and it gives you different SHSH blobs than normal restore."

iOS 6.1 Jailbreak to Support All 22 Device Variations

MuscleNerd, a popular hacker and member of the evad3rs, has revealed that the upcoming iOS 6.1 jailbreak will support all 22 device variations and likely the atv2.

@MuscleNerd is every other device supported?

@unicornhacker yes, every other 6.1 device variation will be supported. All TWENTY-TWO of them (omg!). Plus atv2 if it's out in time.

Unfortunately, with the exploit that's being used, the Apple TV 3 will not be supported.

@MuscleNerd @evad3rs_jb So those of us with atv3 still have to wait for a bootrom

@arovik not necessarily. Although atv3 uses far fewer services that can be tampered with, it's not isolated. But it can't use this next JB

As announced by pod2g, the team is waiting for iOS 6.1 final to drop before releasing their jailbreak. Apple recently released iOS 6.1 'Beta 5'. Interestingly, this build is not really a beta but a publicly releasable build.

Sign the Petition to Make Unlocking Cell Phones Legal

A petition has been started at WhiteHouse.gov to Make Unlocking Cell Phones Legal. If enough signatures are received it will be sent to the appropriate policy officials in the Obama administration and an official response will be posted to the petition page and sent to those who signed the petition.

---
The Librarian of Congress decided in October 2012 that unlocking of cell phones would be removed from the exceptions to the DMCA. As of January 26, consumers will no longer be able unlock their phones for use on a different network without carrier permission, even after their contract has expired.

Consumers will be forced to pay exorbitant roaming fees to make calls while traveling abroad. It reduces consumer choice, and decreases the resale value of devices that consumers have paid for in full. The Librarian noted that carriers are offering more unlocked phones at present, but the great majority of phones sold are still locked.

We ask that the White House ask the Librarian of Congress to rescind this decision, and failing that, champion a bill that makes unlocking permanently legal.
---

We strongly suggest that you sign the petition if you can.
